Spin

Spinning classes are a very effective workout! They are great for all fitness levels. Total Body Fitness offers beginner classes as well. So don't be intimidated, get started! The intensity of the workout
is influenced  by the pedal rate, resistance of the bike's flywheel and your position. When you're in a class with an instructor and bunch of other people it motivates you to push even harder.

Here's an example of Rory's class.

Total Body Fitness offers spinning classes:

Monday 9.30-10.30 AM   &   6-6.45 PM
Tuesday 9.30-10.15 AM   &   5.45-6.25 PM   &   6.30-7.30 PM
 Wednesday 9.30-10.30 AM   &   6-6.45 PM
Thursday 9.30-10.30 AM   &   5.45-6.25 PM   &   6.30-7.30
Friday 9.30-10.30 AM
Saturday 9-9.45 AM

you can reserve your bike at the front desk 45 mins before the class starts

If you are a beginner just let the instructor know and they can help you adjust your bike properly. Wear comfortable clothes and your regular gym shoes. Bring a bottle of water an a small towel. And remember to listen to your body. you are not competing with anyone.

Keeping hydrated

Do you drink enough water?

We've all heard the advice to drink 8 glasses of water daily right? Your total fluid intake should be more than that. But remember that you also get some water from food, and also that you need to drink more water if you exercise, are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you're in hot, humid weather. So nobody can tell you exactly how many ounces to drink so the 8 glasses a day is just an easy advice to remember.

Tips for drinking enough water

1. Figure out what your water intake should be. And then figure out how much you are drinking now. Like anything moderation is the key. Don't overdo it.
2. Keep a glass/bottle of water by you at all times. Keep one on your nightstand and on your desk at work. Make a habit of grabbing a bottle when you leave the house.

3. When you eat, drink water. Drink a glass before and after a meal. Drinking water before a meal also helps you feel more satisfied with less food.

4. Add lemons or limes to your water. If you don't like the taste of water this might help.

5. When you craving junk food, drink a glass or 2 of water instead.

6. Drink 2 glasses of water first thing when you wake up.

7. If you're a coffee drinker, drink a glass of water while waiting for your coffee to brew.

8. Thirsty? Drink water. Feeling thirsty is your body's first sign of dehydration.

Another thing to remember is if you're working out a lot you should make sure your electrolytes are in balance. Sweating makes you lose electrolytes, which affect your function of your muscles, blood acidity (pH), the water in your body and other vital processes, so when working out heavily you need to replace them. You can replace lost potassium electrolytes by eating potassium-rich foods such as bananas, beans and raisins or consume an electrolyte substitute in gel, tablet, powder pack or strip or by drinking a sports drink.

6 Reasons why you should try Aqua Aerobics

1.Water provides 12 times more resistance than the air

Greater resistance results in higher workout intensities compared to land exercises without the gravitational stress and pain

2.Receive a free massage while working out

A massaging effect is created when your muscles are in motion surrounded by water

3.Cross-training for land based athletes

Increased resistance on your muscles improves arm and leg strength and speed (golf, baseball, basketball, biking, hockey)

4.You don’t have to know how to swim

Pool depth is 3 to 4 feet and you don’t have to get your head wet

5.Post-rehab training after a stroke, replacement knee, replacement hip or other injury

Heart rates in the water are generally 12 to 15 beats per minute lower than on land. Researchers say that this is because the water temperature is lower than the body temperature and water pressure on the body helps circulate your blood requiring less work by your heart.

6.Improves balance

Natural water properties creates a fall prevention exercise

We have Aqua Aerobics classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.30 am -10.30 am, Monday and Wednesday 6 pm-7 pm and Saturday 11 am to 12 pm. Diane Kapusta also does personal training in the pool.

Tanning

Tanning beds use UV light to tan people. It's the same process as tanning outdoors in the sun. There are always risks with tanning, whether it's indoors or outdoors, but there are many things you can do to tan safely. Here are some tips but just remember when you use our tanning bed you are doing so at your own risk.

Develop a base tan
Start with just a few minutes to see how your skin reacts.
Gradually increase the time as your skin gets more tan.

Keep your skin hydrated
Moist skin tans better than dry skin. Make sure you drink enough water and use enough
moisturizer. Also use tanning lotion that is meant for indoor tanning beds.

Don't tan every day
You should wait 48 hours between tanning sessions. That gives your skin enough
time to recover from UV exposure and  create new melanin
which is what gives you your color.

Eye protection
This is very important! Your eyelids only block 25 % of UV rays. We do provide eye protection
so if you don't have your own make sure you ask the front desk to give you a pair.

Lips, Tattoos and Acrylic Nails
Remember to use lip balm with SPF. UV light may cause tattoos colors to fade.
Acrylic nails may yellow in UV light.

Medication
Some medication may cause photosensitivity (sun-allergy) so check with your doctor.
we also have a partial list on the wall next to the tanning bed.

Keep in mind that everyone tans differently, Don't rush it and make sure you never burn. Info on tanning prices and how to add it onto your membership you can check the front desk or the sales office.

Blog Poll

We had a poll up at the gym and here are the results

Do you listen to music while working out?

A) Absolutely, I will go back home if I forgot my headphones 65%

B) Yes, Whatever is playing at the gym  34%

C) I'd prefer quiet  1 %

What does this mean? Majority of our members (at least the ones that answered)
prefer their own music. Makes sense, so do I. Many people lose their
headphones so all I can say is make sure you hold on to yours, seems to be very important to all of us :)

PS. Does anyone listen to audiobooks while working out?
